"Tin Men" the movie and siding industry

After 4 siding appointments on Saturday I really got to thinking about our industry. The major driving force for all of these potential customers, of which actually two have become customers was rotten and wavy siding or water damage under siding around windows. Now they all are considering new and hopefully more permenant siding. Some want to paint others want low maintenance and never want to paint again.

The part that was interesting or maybe the more appropriate term would discouraging is the lengths some sales people will go to in order to sell a job. Do you really think a company can be in business for long if they are going to do your complete job for the price that most companies can buy the material and pay good crews? If I can buy the material and pay my labor and I am still $350.00 dollars more expensive something has to be wrong. How can a company offer me 40% off savings or 10-Free windows with a siding job? Oh Yea I know Model Home Discount! If a company has access to all of these tremendous rebates etc why do they want till the end and use it as a closing technique? Does it really seem like the sales person you met with has your best interest in mind or is it possible that they are trying to keep the job cost low (so they can sell it) when they tell you that the rotten, visibly damaged siding you are trying to be replaced should stay on because it will save you money because of it's R-Value. This one was the one that took the cake for the people I met with.

Yes there are some cases where the siding can stay on, but more time than not it seems that companies have made policies that they do not tear-off old siding and the sales people have been trained to sell that policy. The R-value of some of the old siding is around 1. The savings created by rotten siding in most cases is never going to offset the potential cost if we cover some major structural problems that could be eliminated if seen before what we hope to be a more permenant siding is installed. In 7 seven years it is amazing the times that we tore siding off in areas where from looking at the wall you would think there was very little damage underneath, but it was absolutely in terrible shape with mold present. This experience is why I would say 90% of the jobs we do are a complete tear-off of old siding so that we can make sure that no future issues will arise.

I guess my point in this blabbering (Is that a word?) is that I have really come to realize just how different the home improvement project experience can be with two different companies. The major area of improvment for us is to make sure that with every customer we do a much better job of educating them on how Buresh Home Solutions is different. How do you make a customer understand the differences or potential pitfalls without some times being a little negative about a competitor?

CASH FOR CAULKERS ???

We have all heard of "Cash for Clunkers.'' The United States government has proposed, "Cash for Caulkers," or formally "HomeStar." This proposal is designed to help stimulate the economy and offer tax incentives to improve the energy efficiency of homes. This proposed program could mean a lot to the people who need to improve their home. Not only will it offer a 50% rebate (if passed as currently proposed) of up to $12,000 for projects that improve the energy efficiency, but at the same time it is estimated that after completing work you could save 20% or more on your energy bills.

Just thought I would do a quick blog because we are in need of an Office Manager. The position will be opening up in 2 months and I would like to get started on finding the right person. 2009 the year of the Stimulus. OK not really real creative and maybe health care has now taken a lot of the headlines, but one positive action that did come out of the stimulus (An NO I am not being political or suggesting that this is the only positive thing to come from the stimulus bill.) is the Tax Credits for homeowners who install certain designated energy saving products in their homes.

The new credit is different than the prior one passed by congress because in an effort to further lower overall energy cost the new bill does require window products to outperform the ratings of just a few years ago. For example the new U-Factor Requirement is < or = to .30 whereas a few years back it was .35. U-Factor measures the amount of heat that transfers through a given material.

So has you consider replacing your windows make sure they meet the requirements for the tax credit because not only will you get the credit, but you will also have a better performing product for the future.

Tax Credits are great but I also think a homeowner should also look at the other benefits a great window could provide ease of operation, security, long term warranty protection and increased home value (Visit www.CostvsValue.com for home value information) and many manufacturer's are now backing their products with Energy Savings Pledges that guarantee certain percentages of energy consumption decreases. Yes their are certain requirements, but if things don't change in the home over the following year the consumers should see the tangible benefit.

Also we have noticed that more manufacturers are getting aggressive to sell more windows that they are offering a variety of promotions to the contractors that many are passing on to consumers. Like buy 10 windows get 1 free (OK maybe selfish to use that one because that is a current promo for one of the manufacturers we work with www.gorell.com and you can also see that our partnership with them gives you a 40% energy savings pledge with there best performing glass package which will take the U-Value to a .17) Look for quality products with great glass packages and a lot of times the cost to upgrade can be easlily justified by looking at the savings of money and time.
